"I don't really like winter. I mean, I know the plants will just come back in the spring, but still, they die every year... that's not very nice for them, is it? And all the animals have to scrounge for food... it's kind of cruel, really..."

.history.
Born and raised to a family of gentle farmers, Owen's parents intended to have a large family. However, with miscarriages and diseases killing the other children in his family (four of the five besides himself), Owen was left as the youngest child, with one older sister named Kaylene, about 4 years older than Owen himself. Kaylene was just as gentle as Owen himself became in his latter years: beautiful and talented, a musician with no equal, and an artist, she took joy in all the things her family was too poor to provide her in education with. Despite her lack of formal education in these subjects, Kaylene continued to take joy in them, providing her family with laughter and smiles over the brief moments unoccupied by farming.
Owen loved his sister very much, and strove to take after her. However, he found that he had almost no musical talent, and though he had the patience for art, he couldn't see things with an artist's eye. So he instead learned to do what he could to the best of his ability. Being born to farmers, it was natural that he have some skill with plants, but he proved to have an even greener thumb than expected. He took to tending plants easily and well, and soon planted his own flower garden beside the house. He spent much of his own time while not working in the fields tending his garden, and read many books--any that his family could afford--reading about the names of medicinal herbs and medical processes. He soon grew to have a quite exhaustive knowledge of greenery, and could recite the properties of any plant with ease. Not only that, but he knew how to set a broken arm, how to treat an infected wound, and the best cure for headaches. He became regarded among the neighbors as an onofficial doctor, and often did his best to help them when they needed him.
When not studying plants or tending his garden, he took an immense interest in the study of magic. His original intent was to master the art of healing, but when that failed, he moved on to the elemental magics, believing them to be at the basis of all nature. His learning proceeded slowly, but he took an interest in it equal to any interest that Kaylene showed in her musical studies. In order not to burden his parents, he often scrounged up his own money from wherever he could, doing odd jobs for the nearby farmers and selling old possessions in town. He has also always taken an interest in other people's animals, whether they were livestock or just pets, and he himself has owned a myriad of animals in his lifetime, most often strays that "followed him home." His parents always allowed him to keep them without question; he never even needed to be reminded that his pets were "his responsibility."
Another reason for his striving to earn money is because Kaylene is given to fits of illness, and he wants to help his parents earn money for her medication and well-being. He seeks to find a job as a healer if he can, or as a fighter if healing fails him, in order to help his family all he can.

.personality.
Best described as a gentle soul, Owen takes pleasure in the simpler facts of life. His gardening and studies mean the world to him, and he lives for the happiness of others. He's a bit shy, because of his worry that he will offend or tread on someone else's toes. He's deathly worried of saying something that will upset someone else, and as such tends to be rather quiet. When he does choose to speak, however, he's very idealistic, and has been called naive more than once in the past.
His firmest wish is for people to understand one another and the world around them. He's of the belief that all conflicts would end if people just learned to talk and communicate properly, and learned how to live in-sync with their world. Because of this belief, he often doesn't understand people and why they have so many disputes, many of which seem outright ridiculous. He understands animals and plants better than people, and reasons that they don't have disputes with each other the way that people do. While it would be innaccurate to say that he dislikes people, he certainly doesn't understand them. He wishes that he did, but at the same time he's quite satisfied with his understanding of animals and plants, and believes that this knowledge will help him more than ever understanding people will.
Owen has never been able to understand the hunting that is so prominent in Hanalan; he cares too deeply for animals to understand why people would wish to kill them either for food or for sport. Because of this, he's taken on a strict code of not eating meat. Though he will not reprimand other people for eating meat, he is mildly disgusted by the practice, and sometimes gets queasy when others eat meat near him.
He's very shy of bloodshed in general, and gets sick at the thought of causing such pain to others. While he can handle healing wounds and treating them is one thing, causing such pain to another person horrifies him. It's for this reason that he's very hesitant to put his magical capabilities to use; not only is he not sure he's physically capable of harming another person, but he's also terrified of it. The thought of putting someone else in pain using his own capabilities is something he's scared of, and tries not to let himself think about.

.appearance.
Owen is very feminine, to the point that he's been mistook for a girl several times in his life. He has high cheekbones, long eyelashes, the works. He has vivid green eyes set in a pale face, with long blonde hair that frames his face. He tends to wear rather dark colors; his most common gear is dark blue armor and cape over an earthy green tunic. He's very slim, and his clothing fits his form well, further giving the illusion that he's female.
